Will ‘The X-Files’ Be Rebooted?

Hey, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are still kicking around there, folks — and looking good!

Former “X-Files” producer Frank Spotnitz chatted with Den of Geek recently, and was asked a really intriguing question:

Q: Do you foresee The X-Files ever pulling a Star Trek and returning to the small screen in a different incarnation?

Spotnitz: I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I mean, I don’t think I would have anything to do with it but you know, for better or for worse, these things are titles of big corporations, like Star Trek belongs to Paramount and The X-Files belongs to Twentieth Century Fox and it’s a huge asset in their libraries so I can’t imagine they would let it sit languishing forever.

Q: Mulder and Scully: The College Years?

Spotnitz: Anything could happen. I just hope that if they do it, they do it well, that’s my only request.

While the following exchange is hardly confirmation regarding a possible “X-Files” reboot, it certainly begs the question: what is the possibility of the franchise pulling a “Star Trek” and restarting with a young new cast? Is it a good idea? Will it make old-school ’Files fans like myself lose our collective @$#%? And aren’t shows like “Fringe” and even “Bones” sort of “spiritual” offspring of the “X-Files” magic?

And who would they cast?

I dunno, “The X-Files” always seemed to be a show that was built largely on the strength of its specific actors. Maybe if you did a “Dallas”/”Bionic Man” thing where you show the original cast next to their proteges or something.

Or maybe either hire Duchovny/Anderson (who, as far as I know, are both neither opposed to another movie or whatnot), or don’t do it at all. How ’bout that option?*

*The Bean-Counters called, they said no, there’s no “let’s not remake this” option, there’s too much money to be made; but nice try, Fangirl.
