‘A World of Ice And Fire’ Is An Amazing Interactive Guide To ‘Game of Thrones’

The world of Westeros introduced in “Game of Thrones” is a pretty big place with lots of people and places you’ll need to remember if you want to stay in the loop. To make things a little easier for us, Random House Digital has created the “A World of Ice and Fire” app, a massive digital guide to “Game of Thrones” featuring character bios and interactive maps.

The free iPhone and iPad app is described as “the first official app guide to George R. R. Martin’s bestselling” series and whether you’re reading the books or watching the amazing original series on HBO, you’ll definitely want to check it out.

The initial download sets you up with 8 POV characters from the series, along with interactive maps of the North and South. However, if you want full access to the 540+ characters, 380+ places and major houses, along with all the interactive world maps, you’ll have to cough up some dough. $5 will get you everything, including future updates, or you can buy individual “InfoPacks” based on a single book in the series for $.99 each – you’ll save a dollar by purchasing them all at once.

I spent a bit of time browsing through the free version of the app and it looks really good. Each character, place and house features stunning artwork, along with a description written by Elio M. García, Jr. and Linda Antonsson of Westeros.org – the premiere Game of Thrones fan site. On top of that, navigation is a breeze thanks to the handy search bar and alphabetical lists for different categories. Another great feature is the “Books Read” list. Here you can tell the app how far along you are in the series and it will try its best not to spoil anything for you.

Game of Thrones season 3 hits HBO on March 1st, 2013 and this app guide will be a great way to keep track of what’s going on. If you’re a fan of the series, head over to the App Store and snag yourself a digital copy ASAP.
