Comic Artist Tony Harris Blasts Cosplay Girls: ‘Yer Not Comics’

Oy. I try to side-step these recurring slugfests over whether some women are “truly” geeks or not (or merely playing “dress up” and a “role” designed to suck hapless fanboys in like the sirens of old) but this is like every day now.

This time it is “Ex Machina” artist Tony Harris who has sounded off on the apparent method of choice for such soundings, Facebook. I’m just going to quote the “PG” stuff:

“I cant remember if Ive said this before, but Im gonna say it anyway. I dont give a crap.I appreciate a pretty Gal as much as the next Hetero Male. Sometimes I even go in for some racy type stuff ( keeping the comments PG for my Ladies sake) but dammit, dammit, dammit I am so sick and tired of the whole COSPLAY-Chiks. I know a few who are actually pretty cool-and BIG Shocker, love and read Comics. So as in all things, they are the exception to the rule. Heres the statement I wanna make, based on THE RULE: “Hey! Quasi-Pretty-NOT-Hot-Girl, you are more pathetic than the REAL Nerds, who YOU secretly think are REALLY PATHETIC.”

…edit out multiple mentions of “boobies” (in some cases “GREAT boobies”) and…

“You are what I refer to as “CON-HOT”. Well not by my estimation, but according to a LOT of average Comic Book Fans who either RARELY speak to, or NEVER speak to girls. Some Virgins, ALL unconfident when it comes to girls, and the ONE thing they all have in common? The are being preyed on by YOU. You have this really awful need for attention, for people to tell you your pretty, or Hot, and the thought of guys pleasuring themselves to the memory of you hanging on them with your glossy open lips, promising them the Moon and the Stars of pleasure, just makes your head vibrate.”

…sunmoonstars vibrate virgins etc. etc., and…

“And here it is, THE REASON WHY ALL THAT, sickens us: BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW SH*T ABOUT COMICS, BEYOND WHATEVER GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH YOU DID TO GET REF ON THE MOST MAINSTREAM CHARACTER WITH THE MOST REVEALING COSTUME EVER. And also, if ANY of these guys that you hang on tried to talk to you out of that Con? You wouldnt give them the f**king time of day. Shut up you damned liar, no you would not. Lying, Liar Face. Yer not Comics.”

GUhhhhhhhhhh…

This comes a day after finding out about the Dirk Manning thing — shall I call it Manninggate, or is that too many Gs? — who posted a FB pic about “girls who take pitcures in slutty clothing and glasses” being not “nerds” but “whores.” The message of said captioned pic was apparently not “softened” enough by a cuddly image of Ted in a suit, giving it that Seth MacFarlane “everything goes, shipoopi” bit of edgy humor that seemed to be so desperately needed in that  case.

Friends, citizens, countrypeople — I am not here to fall into the “real Geek Girl or not?” debate. I have worked with and known personally many women who cosplay. I have a teenage niece who did her first cosplay this year at San Diego Comic Con. And I have seen little girls — three, four years old — proudly wear Captain America and Spider-Man outfits. There is no reason for me to say that I would get “all up in somebody’s face” and perhaps open a can of some sort of not-nice upon any individual who would call any of these females “whore,” “Quasi-Pretty-NOT-Hot-Girl,” “fake,” etc. — and that is because I firmly believe that none of these men who are so bold on the Internet about these topics could look these females in the eye, in person, and say such things.

That said, the thought that my niece would have to read half the crap that goes on about “real geek girls,” etc — some of it started by other females themselves — makes me so sick I want to PUKE!

It’s cool to debate these issues. Everybody has an opinion. But don’t be a jerk about it. Don’t use ad hominem attacks. If you’re a comic book artist and frustrated by the attention female cosplayers get at conventions — start a conversation about it. If you’re a feminist and feel that women dressed in skimpy outfits at cons are promoting sexism, write a post about it. Or talk to the con organizer. Write a post stating your case in a manner that doesn’t involve calling women ugly or stupid or slut or “are not comics.” That just seems to be a better method for dealing with this. Because all you do by writing the sort of post Harris has done is polarize this complex issue into “YEAH COSPLAY GIRLS SUCK!” and “YOU ARE A SEXIST JERK!”

Eye-for-an-eye-blind, etc.
