Viz Packs Miyazaki's Nausicaä Manga Into a Beautiful Boxed Set

Viz is giving manga and anime lovers something special to put on their holiday wish lists this year: A deluxe boxed set of Hayao Miyazaki's manga "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." And while the $60 price tag may seem steep, it is already discounted at Amazon, and Viz is giving away one copy in a special sweepstakes.

While Miyazaki is mostly known for his anime, he has drawn several manga; of these "Nausicaä" is the longest and the most complete; in fact, the storyline of the manga continues far beyond the anime that was based on it. The setting is a post-apocalyptic planet that is dominated by a huge toxic area, the Sea of Corruption. The sea emits poisonous gases, and it is also a breeding ground for horrifying mutant creatures such as man-eating caterpillars, which occasionally swarm out and attack the surrounding area. On the fringes of this war-torn wasteland lies the Valley of the Wind, a small settlement with just 500 souls. The manga tells the story of the princess of this kingdom, Nausicaä, as she travels the face of this toxic world and tries to save her village and the rest of humanity.

"Nausicaä" already has a firm place in manga history. It was first published in the U.S. in 1988, making it one of the first manga to cross the Pacific, and although the original edition was woefully undersized given the complexity of the art, Viz later issued a seven-volume set in a larger format. This new set is also in a large format, but the seven volumes have been combined into two. It is slipcased and includes a color posters, and the volumes also include eight full-color inserts.

Viz is giving away one copy of the boxed set in a special sweepstakes that ends November 26.
