Another hour, another packed to the gills panel at New York Comic Con, as Marvel welcomed fans of television to learn more about the animated – and possibly live action – offerings from Marvel TV. On the panel moderated by Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb were, well… Jeph Loeb. Cause you’ve got an army, but Marvel has a Loeb.
First up, Leob showed off a clip from Marvel Mash-Up. It was cute! The Mash-Ups, in case you don’t know, take old cartoon clips, and mix them with goofy voiceover.
Then he talked about Ultimate Spider-Man, which Loeb called, “An incredible ride.” The show has been renewed for a second season, then showed off art from Season Two. In the second season, Spidey and Co. will be facing off against The Sinister Six. The sixth member is a big mystery for the season.
…And then entered surprise guest Clark Gregg, to HUGE cheers from the crowd. He jumped down from the stage, hugged the crowd, and getting back up, tripped and fell. “That’s the second time he died this year!” joked Loeb. Gregg plugged an indie film he’s working on, and then said, “But I heard there was an Ultimate Spider-Man panel… I got on the red eye.”
Then, as a special surprise, Loeb showed off an “In Memorium” type tribute reel to Agent Coulson, again to huge applause from the crowd, and tears from Gregg. “I grew up loving comics, and Marvel Comics, This little gig was the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. And the greatest part was connecting to people like you. Thank you.”
Then the whole crowd erupted in cheers of “Coulson! Coulson!” To which Gregg said, “Have you heard of a thing called a Life Model Decoy? Have you heard of the Vision?” Loeb chided him, and then… Biggest news of the Con: Joss Whedon came on video, and said Coulson would never be on TV, or return… Until Kevin Feige came out with “Coulson Lives” T-Shirt, and said, “Did you think there was ever going to be a SHIELD show without Agent Coulson?” Whedon: “There was never going to be a SHIELD show without Agent Coulson.” And then they announced Gregg would be headlining SHIELD on ABC!
The crowd went INSANE, as you can imagine.
Gregg left to huge cheers, with Loeb saying, “That’s what you call a hard act to follow. He then showed off an animation test for HULK and the Agents of SMASH (the same one shown at San Diego: it is cool). The voice cast is Seth Grenn (Rick Jones/A-Bomb), Eliza Dushku (She-Hulk), and some others I did not catch. Paul Dini and Henry Gilroy will take care of the writing.
He also showed off Avengers Assemble (again, previously seen at San Diego). Adrian Pasdar will be Iron Man, and others will join the cast. Loeb followed this off showing off a Marvel Knights clip-reel. No new news here!
Loeb then announced Sony and Madhouse will be doing their first original anime, “Iron Man: Rise of Technovore,” featuring Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, War Machine, and Punisher. They showed a clip. It was rough, but you could see Iron Man and War Machine fighting, and a weird little kid, because it’s anime. And that was it!
