Next week marks the kick-off of a convention so big, some pros – and fans – have taken to calling it “San Diego 2.” That’s right, it’s New York Comic-Con 2012, and by all indications, the crowds should be even more massive than the last, record breaking year. To help you get through the crush, we’ve put together a list of THE must see panels, to help you schedule your whole weekend. Oh, and by the way… Your weekend starts on Thursday:
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11TH
Producers, prizes, and more celebrate this landmark for the fighting game series. Plus, a special appearance by that car you had to break in the first game! Not really.
6:30pm-7:30pm: DC COMICS – THE NEW 52: SUPERMAN
The first big comics panel of the Con features Grant Morrison, Scott Lobdell, Rags Morales, and more talking about the future of the man of steel. Will we find out more about plans to tie into next year’s big movie? Maybe?
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12th
11:15am-12:15pm: MARVEL: HOUSE OF IDEAS
Mark Waid, Matt Kindt and more hit this panel to talk about everything Marvel digital!
12:15pm-1:15pm: BRIAN WOOD & DARK HORSE: FROM WORLD’S END TO THE GALAXY’S BEGINNING
Check out this spotlight panel as the newly prolific creator chats Star Wars, Conan, The Massive, and more. Wood has gone from being shy about public appearances, to having his own spotlight. Career paths, you guys. Career paths.
12:30pm-1:30pm: DEBUTING THE VISION MACHINE IPAD APP!
Wait! We promise we won’t make you choose too often, but writer Greg Pak is joined by Phil Lamarr and Jonathan Coulton to talk about the iPad version of the comic that predicted Google Glasses. Awesome.
1:45pm-2:45pm: MTV GEEK
Wait, are we on this panel? What’s going on? Seriously, we have no idea, though past panels have featured the cast of Teen Wolf and hundreds of screaming fans, so we imagine this will be the same, except for just Matt Morgan and one insane “Ticket to Ride” fan.
The rising Publisher takes the stage with Duane Swierczynski, Fred Van Lente and more to chat about their upcoming comics. Plus: prizes!
4:15pm-5:15pm: DC COMICS ALL ACCESS: BEFORE WATCHMEN
Amanda Conner, Brian Azzarello, and the rest of the BW gang are on hand to catch your tomatoes.
Slightly less geeky, but thanks for paying our electricity bills, you guys. Go see their panel!
7:00pm-7:45pm: SCOTT C AND THE GREAT SHOWDOWNS, FROM RIPLEY VS THE ALIEN QUEEN TO HAN VS THE GREEN FELLOW!
We’ll stop the self serving stuff in a moment, but your faithful reporter would be excited about this panel even if he wasn’t moderating it. Scott C is well known for his ridiculous Great Showdowns, and the panel will feature not just giveaways of his upcoming book, but free sketches for anyone who asks questions. That’s if we can get through the panel title in the time allotted, of course.
7:45pm-8:45pm: WALTER SIMONSON AND RIDLEY SCOTT’S ALIEN
The legendary Walt Simonson hits the stage to talk about his excellent adaptation of Alien, which recently got a gorgeous re-release.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13th
11:00am-12:00pm: THE IMAGE COMICS EXPERIENCE
Eric Stephenson hosts a panel that’s sure to be chock full of giant announcements for the Publisher. At San Diego, they basically listed every creator in comics, and assigned them projects. How will they top themselves this time?
Get your first look at footage for the eagerly awaited conclusion, as well as surprises (Person of Interest’s Michael Emerson, who voices The Joker, perhaps?) and announcements about the upcoming slate from DC Animated.
1:30pm-2:30pm: DC COMICS – THE NEW 52
All the dudes you can handle, and Editor Bobbie Chase! But seriously folks, this is probably where DC will spill the big news… Plus writer Marc Guggenheim will be on hand to talk about The CW’s Arrow. On a comic book panel? Hmmm…
2:45pm-3:45pm: MARVEL NOW! THE AVENGERS
Uncanny Avengers hits the week of the Con, and this panel hits a few days after that, so expect the talk to go from “wait and see” to “you’ve been seen’d.”
4:00pm-5:00pm: VERTIGO – FABLES: 10TH ANNIVERSARY!
The most enduring title at Vertigo brings the whole gang back together to look at ten years of fairy tale delights.
5:15pm-6:15pm: HELLBOY IN HELL: THE OFFICIAL PANEL!
Creator Mike Mignola has been pretty tight lipped about the upcoming Hellboy storyline, except for the title of course. Here, the floodgates open! Kids love floodgates.
5:30pm-6:30pm: MARVEL NOW! CUP O’ JOE
As we said, we’re rarely going to make you choose, but if you’re into big Marvel announcements, this is usually where they show up… And Marvel usually saves its biggest announcements for the New York show. CHOOSE.
At San Diego Comic-Con, there was a huge event reuniting the cast and crew of Joss Whedon’s much beloved Firefly. That panel was filmed, and will premiere on The Science Channel on November 11th. This is the panel about the show about the panel. If this is filmed, and put on TV, and there’s a panel about THAT at San Diego next year, we will officially have achieved singularity.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14TH
10:45am-11:45am: MARVEL NOW!: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN & BEYOND
With Amazing Spider-Man “ending” with issue #700, will we find out what’s coming next for Peter Parker – and more importantly, Dan Slott? Probably not, but there will certainly be a lot of questions about all that.
12:00pm-12:30pm: SESAME STREET
Gordon and Elmo hit the stage to address Mitt Romney’s allegations that he’s going to fire them. Topical!
12:15pm-1:15pm: DC COMICS: BATMAN – DEATH COMES TO GOTHAM
Probably DC’s biggest panel of the Con, we’ll find out just what’s coming up in the “Death of the Family” arc, plus the conclusion of Grant Morrison’s epic run.
Robert Kirkman takes the stage solo, finally getting some face-time at a convention where, we’re sure, his creations will run well under the radar.
And “that’s it.” Tell us what panels we missed folks, what you’re dying to see, and what will dominate New York! We’ll see you there.
