Imagine if J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings were an actual account of events in our history, and those events were recorded in stained glass. Artist Jian Guo has created a series of illustrations that envision LOTR as such, and the results are undeniably impressive. Head past the break for some nice big images!
While the artwork may not be actual stained glass work, the illustrations do a great job mimicking the art form. The series depicts several memorable scenes from the Tolkien's stories, including Bilbo's birthday celebration, the Mines of Moria, the Gates of Argonath, the hobbits' arrival in Lothlórien and their encounter with Gildor Inglorion.
Guo provides wonderful descriptions of each piece on his deviantART page, where all of the works are displayed. What we love most about them are the smaller details set in the background of each. One in particular – Gandalf fighting off the Balrog in the “Welcome from Lothlórien” illustration – stands out the most.
Which of Guo's Lord of the Rings pieces do you like most? What other stories would make good stained glass illustrations? Sound off in the comments below!
