Going Green: Pope Benedict XVI Just Got An All-Electric, Zero Emission ‘Popemobile’

Popes have always known how to travel in style, but in recent years Pope Bendict XVI has been looking for a more environmentally friendly ride to serve as the Popemobile. Thankfully, Renault had just the thing and donated the 100% emission free, all-electric Popemobile you see above to the Vatican!

The new Popemobile is based on a Kangoo Maxi Z.E., but was heavily modified by French coachbuilder Gruau. The custom green machine has the Papal coat of arms on both the doors, an opening roof, removable rear side windows, hinged rear side doors and electrically folding door steps. It was also outfitted with some extra comfy seats in the rear to ensure His Holiness’ ride is a smooth one.

As far as power goes, the new Popemobile is equipped a 60hp electric motor that draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack. Fully-charged, the Pope’s new ride can travel up 170km (about 105 miles) without any extra juice.

Renault Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn was also nice enough to supply a second vehicle for use by the Corps of Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City for the Pope’s security. This vehicle is in many ways the same as the one delivered to the Pope himself, but features a blue paint scheme sporting white and yellow stripes.
