'Killer Klowns From Outer Space' Returning to Earth on Blu-ray

The Chiodo Brothers' creature feature about extraterrestrial types and their plans to pack us up as delicious circus food is coming to Blu on September 11th. Special features and disc details after the jump.

I'd like to think of 1988's Killer Klowns From Outer Space as part of the Fangoria era of horror movies: that period of time where a terrific collection of makeup effects was enough to keep your movie circulating among the VHS set for years (you can lump Pumkinhead and Rawhead Rex into this group). Stephen, Charles, and Edward Chiodo's movie had the benefit of actually being funny and not simply resting on the grotesque visuals of its lumpy, murderous space clowns.

The film, whose two biggest names were Animal House star John Vernon and a young Christopher Titus, involves the titular aliens setting down in a small town to start snatching up the locals for foodstuffs. The Chiodo boys--who also specialized in make up effects--were responsible for some clever riffs on circus-themed items actually being deadly alien weapons, leading to a collection of sometimes gruesome deaths for its cast.

After its initial VHS release way back in the late 80's, the movie made its way to DVD in 2001 was part of MGM's "Midnite Movies' line after going out of print briefly in a release without that banner. The new disc, from Fox, will include a DTS HD 2.0 soundtrack in English and French Dolby Digital 1.0 along with the following features:

-Theatrical Feature Blu-ray

-Audio Commentary with the Chiodo Brothers

-5 Featurettes: The Making of Killer Klowns, Komposing Klowns, Visual Effects with Gene Warren, Jr., Kreating Klowns, Chiodo Brothers’ Earliest Films

-2 Deleted Scenes with Director’s Commentary

-Original Theatrical Trailer

The same day that disc hits, Fox will also be giving Jeepers Creepers and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 their Blu-ray debut.
