Joss Whedon's online cult hit "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" is headed for its television debut -- at the CW.
"Dr. Horrible" will air on Tuesday, October 9, at 9PM on the CW, following "Hart of Dixie's" second episode of its sophomore season. Joss Whedon had mentioned during San Diego Comic-Con that his web series would hit the CW, but didn't have an air date...or confirmation (or denial!) that new episodes of 'Dr. Horrible" would be made as some sort of TV show. Can airing the show on the CW be some sort of "test" to see if there's enough interest in a regular series?
Call me an incurable optimist, but I think it could be. While Whedon has had epic struggles with TV in the past, most notably with the short-lived series "Dollhouse" and "Firefly," his new cred as "Avengers" director could possibly give him any series he wants -- without, we would assume, a lot of network interference ("just keep printing that lovely green paper, Joss..."). However, with "Dr. Horrible" stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion both comfortable in successful TV shows, and Felicia Day with "The Guild" and her web venture "Geek and Sundry," anything more than a series of specials airing on the CW doesn't seem too likely.
At any rate, with Whedon dropping numerous hints that he has plans for further "Dr. Horrible" adventures in the future, it seems quite likely that youth-oriented network CW would make a great home for them, whatever form they take.
