Before the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International, we made a list of our Top Ten Con-Exclusive Action Figures. Guess what happened to be number one on that very list? This Hasbro Marvel Legends set of Uncanny X-Force members: Wolverine, Psylocke, and Archangel! They’re all sporting their black and gray/silver assassin-y type uniforms and that multiplied our want for these far more than we thought possible. We love teams that preemptively murder threats to mutant-kind, what can we say?! Did these figures live up to our expectations– and the high prices they’re drawing on evilbay? Read on to find out as we review the Marvel Legends Uncanny X-Force SDCC-Exclusive 3-Pack!
This set is displayed in a window box that easily shows off all three figures inside. Of course, Archangel takes up most of the upper half, but that’s what everyone was excited about anyway, right? The back of the package has some sweet-ass artwork by, Marvel mainstay, Clayton Crain of the three X-Force members, along with some text recapping the recent story from Marvel’s Uncanny X-Force in which Archangel went bats**t crazy– becoming the new Apocalypse and forcing his teammates to take him down.
Warren was definitely the highlight of the pack for most people upon seeing this set for the first time, and for good reason. Not only does he sport a well-articulated and proportioned base body, but his wings are kind of incredible! They attach through a hole in his back and the shape of the mount fits tightly against his back, preventing the heavy wings from twisting too much to either side. The have swivels at the base of each wing and hinges in the middle of the main wings and hinges on the two smaller ones behind them. The wings have a nice size and the silver paint comes off looking like a million bucks! However, any and all drawbacks also comes from the silver paint. On the wings, it scratches far easier than we’d like and the silver linework on his suit tends to have some fuzzy edges. Hes still a great figure, but be easy on those wings, folks!
Ms. Braddock has the same base female body we’ve seen before from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends with a couple of new pieces added to set her apart. Her head sculpt is nice with some fantastic hair. She also employs a sash around her waist and new feet. While her head sculpt is nice, it suffers somewhat from thick paint on the face. Her articulation works well, and her included psychic sword can be held in one or both of her hands. Psylocke also has the distinction of not being released in an upcoming wave of Marvel Legends, so if you’re a fan of Betsy, then this is the only way to get her.
Okay, we’re about to make a statement that you can believe or not, but we’ll gladly argue it:
This is the best Legends Wolverine figure EVER!
Yes, that takes into account all of the many versions Toy Biz knocked out in their heyday, including those in X-Men Classics. From his sculpt, to his articulation model, this version of Logan blows away all the others. Even his claws are a step up from the others by having individual claws inserted into the hand and constructed from rigid plastic– no bent claws for this mutie! This version of Wolverine has a properly shorter height and features a swivel/hinge neck, hinged pecs, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel glove tops, hinged wrists, ball-joint torso, ball-joint hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel boot tops, and swivel/hinge rocker ankles. Another version of this wolverine will be released in an upcoming wave of Marvel Legends, but the fray on his costume is going to be replaced with silver.
So, is this set all it’s cracked up to be? Yes. Is it worth the 100+ dollars people are asking for it online? That’s up to you and your level of Marvel Legends/Uncanny X-Force love.
