Friday the 13th at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con International saw a historic announcement from Mattel during their annual Mattypalooza panel. On their collector-based Matty Collector website, Mattel will be offering figures based on DC Comics legendary Watchmen comics. While there has been action figures from the Watchmen film, there has never before been any kind of tie-in with the original comic by creators Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The Four Horsemen (DC Universe Classics, Masters of the Universe Classics, Dark Knight Rises Movie Masters) have been tasked with sculpting the six main characters from the book, and have done a tremendous job of bringing the look of the original artwork into three dimensions while still keeping them compatible with the DC Universe 6″ line.
Read on for info on the Club Black Freighter subscription line and more photos of the revealed Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan– the only two completed so far!
Rorschach will be the first figure in the line and will be released in January of 2013. The unforgiving vigilante comes equipped with his grapple gun and a figure stand. with his long coat, we can’t tell just how useful his articulation is going to be below the belt, but we’re hoping it’s constructed of a softer, pliable plastic.
Dr. Manhattan is the second release in the line and will be mailed to subscribers in March of 2013. He’ll come with a stand, and his junk is appropriately covered. His figure looks like it’ll be able to better utilize the articulation and looks to have the same joint system we’ve come to know from DC Universe Classics.
While both of those figures look fantastic, we’re excited to see Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, The Comedian, and Ozymandias as well. Figures will become available one at a time, beginning in January of 2013, and will then be released on a bi-monthly basis until all six figures find their way onto your shelves. For those of you interested, the Club Black Freighter subscription is currently available on the Matty Collector website.
