The focus was squarely on animation at this year’s Marvel TV panel, with news about Hulk Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Avengers, and Ultimate Spider-Man. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel TV, kicked off the panel announcing that the Marvel AR App would unlock some special features if you use it on the Ultimate Spider-Man buttons given out at the door. Then, he warned everybody that there are sixteen SHIELD agents scattered throughout the room who were going to confiscate any phones or cameras that recorded the special footage shown during the panel.
Business out of the way, Loeb noted that in January, Disney opened up an animation studio for Marvel in Burbank – leading into a one of the Marvel Mash-Ups from the Marvel Universe block on Disney XD. That over, he teased that there should be some “marvelous” announcements at the Phineas and Ferb panel tomorrow at SDCC.
Loeb then moved on to talk about HULK AND THE AGENTS OF S.M.A.S.H. No new news on it, until he showed off an animation test of the show. He noted that it isn’t the end voices, or the look, it’s just a test. And then we watched some footage! Tonally, and in animation style, it looked a bit like Ultimate Spider-Man, with cutaways, freezes when the characters are introduced, and lost of jokes. We also saw She-Hulk with power gloves, Red Hulk with a chain gun, and Skaar with a big sword. Only characters without weapons were Hulk and A-Bomb. Looks fun, coming in 2013.
Then, Loeb moved on to the “elephant in the room,” stating that Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes always had a 52 episode order. He then stated that once Avengers came out, they “had a problem.” So instead of cancelling the show, they’re going to “transition out” from the show, into “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.” Cast looks to be Hawkeye, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Falcon, and Loeb insisted that after EMH wraps up, it will not only get an “epic finish,” but also transition into Avengers Assemble, “just like in the comics.”
Then he showed off another animation test, which again looked very similar to Hulk and Spider-Man, with some cutaways and jokes – though far more serious than the other two. The footage looked like most of the team (minus Black Widow and Falcon) fighting Fin Fang Foom, with relationships drawn from the movie – particularly Thor and Hulk. That’s coming in 2013, too.
Next up, Marvel Knights animation, kicking off with Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable will hit in November 13, 2012. Also coming up, Inhumans, Wolverine Origin, Wolverine Weapon X, Ultimate Wolverine/Hulk, and Eternals. Those are all coming soon.
Then it was Ultimate Spider-Man time. In Season 2, the team will be fighting Lizard, Rhino, Beetle, Kraven, and Electro, according to preview art. And then they showed off an unaired episode of the show, featuring Spider-Ham. No joke. No spoilers for the episode, but it was actually a ton of fun, one of the better episodes of the show – and that was it! See you at the next panel.
