Doctor Who's David Tennant Regenerates Into New BBC America Show 'The Spies Of Warsaw'

As much as we love Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, there’s one major ingredient the last few seasons of Doctor Who have been missing: David Tennant. Well, the wait is over, as BBC America is bringing Tennant back to the tube with a brand new mini-series: ‘The Spies of Warsaw.’

There’s a number of exciting bits to this piece of news, not least of which is that the miniseries is an original co production by BBC America for their Dramaville block of programming… Which means the mini will premiere in the USA first, NOT in the UK like a BBC production would. Looks like the biscuit is on the other foot now, doesn’t it Brits?

Anyway, you probably want to know something about the series, right? Here’s the official description from BBC America:

In the mini-series, French and German intelligence operatives are locked in a life-and-death struggle in the espionage arena. At the French embassy, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier (Tennant), a decorated war hero of the 1914 war, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of Warsaw. At the same time, the handsome aristocrat finds himself in a passionate love affair with Anna (Janet Montgomery), a Parisian lawyer for the League of Nations. Their complicated love affair intensifies as German tanks drive through the Black Forest. The Spies of Warsaw combines historical, intelligent narratives, interlaced with flawed, romantic and compelling characters.

Also of note? In the supporting cast, there’s someone who actually is playing a Doctor – specifically, ‘The Hours’ Anton Lesser as Doctor Lapp. If they don’t work in some sort of, “I’m sorry, Doctor who?” dialogue in there, I think we can all agree this miniseries is totally bogus. That’s right: bogus.

The production – based on Alan Furst’s acclaimed spy novel – begins shooting next month in Poland, though there’s no premiere date yet.
