We knew when Apple revealed the new iPad and its HD Retina display that developers would be right behind them with hi-res updates for their apps and ComiXology is getting in on the action too. Today they announced version 3.1 of the Comics by ComiXology app and their new HD digital comics format, CMX-HD.
In addition to the new hi-res comic book and graphic novel format, version 3.1 of the app also introduces digital comics readers to new social networking features that will allow us to share our favorite books with friends through Twitter, Facebook and email. Even better, comics previously downloaded through the app can be upgraded to the new CMX-HD format for free as soon as the hi-res version becomes available.
“We knew the moment Apple announced the new iPad with its stunning Retina display that we needed to meet the challenge of delivering the highest resolution comic content in the industry — and with CMX-HD we did just that,” said comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “We know our fans will love this new format and it’s fantastic to be able to deliver CMX-HD at the same time we’re integrating social to the app. After hitting 50 million standard definition comic and graphic novel downloads recently, we look forward to our next 50 million high-definition downloads being driven through social sharing.”
The new format debuts today for a select number of comic books and graphic novels available through the app. However, ComiXology has said that over the next few months they will be working “to fill out the entire CMX-HD catalog.”
Another super cool feature hitting the app in version 3.1 is the “Read Now” button. Up until now we’ve had to wait for the entire comic or graphic novel to download before we started reading it, but the “Read Now” button will replace the former “Downloading” button and allow you to pop the book open as soon as the download begins.
