Marvel Joins IDW, Image And Others On Apple iBooks

Between the Marvel Comics app, ComiXology and host of other outlets, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Marvel titles on your iPad or iPhone. Now a new option has just popped up as Marvel has joined several other publishers and added a large collection of digital comics to Apple's iBooks.

"Marvel is taking the world of comics by storm and releasing a massive selection of our best and brightest graphic novels on the iBookstore,” said Peter Phillips, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Marvel Digital Media Group. "For the first time ever, fans will be able to easily find and enjoy all of their favorite heroes including The Avengers, Spider-Man and The X-Men on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch --  one of the best digital platforms for reading comics and graphic novels."

I went ahead and downloaded a free issue of The New Avengers that Marvel is currently giving away through iBooks and I was a little disappointed. While I do enjoy iBooks for prose novels and other non-graphic reading, I'm just not liking comic books through Apple's reading app.

ComiXology and other digital comic book readers provide great features like frame-by-frame scrolling and allow me to view single pages. iBooks on the other hand treats graphic novels like any other book, with part of the last page you were on creeping over into the page you're reading. It's fine for a two-page spread, but most of the time its just annoying. On the upside, another digital comic book outlet really just increases the possibility of more sales for us, right?

Marvel has added over 80 graphic novels to iBooks such as Civil War, Avengers, Stephen King’s Dark Tower, Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm, and Astonishing X-Men, but they're not the only ones in on the action. Back in September IDW became the first major comics publisher to sell through iBooks and since then Image Comics and slew of others have joined in. There's even a bit of Manga floating around in iBooks, so go look around if you haven't lately.
