Evil Hat Productions Scores Atomic Robo RPG License

In the slow advancement of a plot to make me read more comic books, Atomic Robo will soon enter the world of tabletop roleplaying. Evil Hat Productions will do the honors, using the popular Fate system as a base for the game. Atomic Robo will be in good company, though, as Fate has already spawned such popular titles as Spirit of the Century and the Dresden Files RPG.

At the helm, Evil Hat will be placing Atomic Robo Brian Clevinger himself alongside Fate system veteran Mike Olson. As it turns out, Clevinger and artist Scott Wegener are huge RPG enthusiasts, particularly of Evil Hat's Spirit of the Century. This made for a natural fit between the two parties, who have decided to go public with this announcement immediately upon striking an agreement. Development on the Atomic Robo RPG will begin next month, but according to Evil Hat head Fred Hicks, it is still up in the air whether the game will see a late 2012 or early 2013 release.

Atomic Robo will join several other comic book properties that the hobby gaming industry has recently licensed, such as Lock and Key, Mouse Guard, and The Walking Dead, not to mention a major new Marvel Comics RPG that is on the way.

Needless to say, the game will be in some good company, and I for one look forward to giving it a try. In the official press release, Fred Hicks described Atomic Robo's themes as "action-science, robots, angry talking dinosaurs, high weirdness, and more." I'm sold. Now it's time to go order some trades.
