Now that it’s January, there have been a lot of “Best Of” and favorite lists about things from 2011. comiXology, which hosts more than 5,000 digital comic titles from companies like DC, Marvel, IDW, Digital Manga and more, put together a 2011 comiXologist choice awards. People were asked about their favorite digital comics from 2011 and the results are out.
David Steinberger, the co-founder and CEO of comiXology, talked to MTV Geek about the awards.
“The awards were open to anyone following @comixology on Twitter,” he said. “We thought we’d rely on social media and the incredibly loyal and outspoken fanbase we’ve built there. This was our way of letting them have the final say on the books they read digitally in 2011. The idea was to have fans tweet us their nominations using the hashtag #comixawards2011. There was a different category designated for each day of the week and fans voted each day by telling us their favorite books.”
When asked if he noticed any trends, he said, “We noticed that a lot of people like a lot of different things! Which is great. We got a really good feel for what people were reading in 2011. We wound up with a long list of nominees and for this first time around we decided to keep with the true spirit of a ‘People’s Choice’ type of an award and feature as many of the books as we possibly could.”
It’s worth noting that many smaller press and creator owned titles did well in the awards.
“We did see huge groundswell of support for the small press/creator owned books,” said Steinberger. “In fact, the last category featured during the awards week was ‘Favorite Creator-Owned Series.’ The votes really poured in for that one and it was fun to see so many people show support for their favorite creator-owned titles. Digital offers a lot of opportunities for independent books and creators to reach new audiences around the globe, and if there is one thing this little social media experiment showed us, it’s that fans of a good book will happily go to bat for it given the chance.”
