Black, White, and Red: McFarlane Toys Deputy Rick Grimes Review

Season 2 of The Walking Dead is currently in a mid-season hiatus over on AMC, but don't let that stop you from enjoying all the flesh-eating, betrayals, and camping out! That's right, thanks to McFarlane Toys, you can use your imagination and create your own little apocalypse right there on your desk at work with their Walking Dead action figures! (We're giving away a set of them here) Today, we'll be taking a look at the exclusive grayscale, blood-spattered, Deputy Rick Grimes figure from The Walking Dead TV Series line. So, read on for shots of Rick hanging out with Dick Tracy and Ninja Turtles!

After waking from a coma in an abandoned hospital, deputy Rick Grimes finds the world he knew gone -- ravaged by a zombie epidemic of apocalyptic proportions. Our figure of Rick features the exact likeness of the actor, taken from a 3D scan of Andrew Lincoln himself. The figure comes with a revolver, shotgun, walkie talkie, baseball bat, and hand grenade accessories.

As stated in the bio, this figure's sculpt was done using 3-D scanning technology like the kind used by McFarlane Toys on their various Sports lines. What this means is by buying this figure, you score yourself an Andrew Lincoln-shaped voodoo doll statue. While the articulation has been obviously added afterward, the cuts and joints aren't nearly as visible so the sculpt keeps it's tight lines.

The paint is where this figure gets all it's mysterious exclusiveness! Rick has been painted using a grayscale color scheme like that of the original comics (or the TV show if you use the option on the Blu-Ray edition) with the addition of some very red blood effects. This is one of the best black and white figures we've seen, and even top NECA's Sin City movie figures from a few years ago. The only downside is from the red bloodsplatter. While this will be different from figure to figure, ours scored a red dot on his right eye. Therefore, it's only a matter of time until our toy becomes one of the undead himself! Noooo! Why must life be so unfair?! Ah, no big deal. Also, like the comic Series figure, Deputy Grimes is perpetually looking to his left. Great for aiming, but not great for looking straight.

Rick has quite a bit of articulation, although it might not be quite as useful or needed as you might think. He features a ball-joint neck, swivel/hinge shoulders, swivel biceps, hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, swivel waist, swivel "v" hips, swivel thighs, hinged knees, and ball-joint ankles. First off, all of the articulation is tight and holds its position well. Second, it barely matters since it has basically been added to a statue, so almost any movement other than the arms and neck breaks up the lines in the sculpt noticeably... veeerrryyyy noticeably. Luckily, this doesn't keep Rick from looking like any less of a badass while keeping our shelf free from the zombie hordes, but those v-hips are our most hated articulation joint so we will also quietly curse him under our breath.

Like the Comic Series figures, Deputy Grimes comes equipped with a number of tools used in the destruction of zombies. A Glock pistol, revolver, shotgun, baseball bat, grenade, and radio all come packaged for maximum zombie-blasting effectiveness. Like the weaponry with other Walking Dead line, these are top notch! Not only are they painted with appropriate wear and tear, but are constructed from stiff plastic so no worries about warped, rubbery guns!

In all, this exclusive version of Deputy Rick Grimes is exactly what we like in an exclusive figure. It offers a cool option for fans, but not something that collectors will be killing themselves to get in order to complete a set. It also matches up well with the Previews exclusive Zombie two-pack and the black and white Rick from the Comic Series.
