Shout! Factory Releasing 'Transformers: The Japanese Collection' In January on DVD

Excellent! But let me be the first to say that Optimus without Cullen and Megatron without Welker is just strange.

On January 2nd, Shout! Factory is releasing this 13-disc set which collects the three follow-up series that came after "G1" Transformers, presented in Japanese with English subs. From the press release, it looks like the special features will be limited to art galleries. Am I alone in wishing they could have included some additional archival material here like commercials, retrospectives, etc.? Given the legacy of the show at this point, I have to imagine there are plenty of people involved who'd be willing to talk on-camera about their work with Transformers (or that is to say, their Japanese incarnations), and this kind of omission is always disappointing.

Still, that's 13-discs of animation right there and you can preorder the set on the Shout! Factory site.

Here are the synopses for the included for the trio of series in the set:

Optimus Prime lives again, the energy of the Matrix has been released and peace reigns on Cybertron . . . but all that is about to change with the startling arrival of the newest breed of Transformers warriors

Following their victory over the DESTRONS (a/k/a DECEPTICONS) at the end of Headmasters, the CYBERTRONS (AUTOBOTS) depart Earth, leaving behind only a small group to protect the planet from any future menace. But when the powerful DESTRONS return to an unsuspecting planet, the CYBERTRONS must come out of hiding to defend their human friends once again — only this time they’ll be unable to do it on their own!

Victory is the third and final installment of this Japanese trilogy— introduces four new factions to the TRANSFORMERS universe. Each group comes equipped with its own unique power and the ability to combine to form much larger, more powerful TRANSFORMERS, making each and every battle even more epic!

Transformers: The Japanese Collection will be available on January 2nd from Shout! Factory and you can preorder it here.
