Unless this is your first time at the rodeo, you know how this goes: step one, Activision releases a Call of Duty game that breaks shipping and/or sales records; step two, Activision announces within a day of the most recent release that you’re going to be getting a sequel next year. Repeat until video games don’t exist anymore and we’re all getting our entertainment through hyper-sentient “fun cubes.” Case in point, yesterday’s global release of Modern Warfare 3 has resulted in the biggest shipment of a title in one day in gaming history. Just to clarify, that’s not sold, that’s ordered and shipped to retailers for sale, meaning there are a lot of copies of out there.
In a quarterly report, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed that yes, there will be a new COD game in 2012 alongside the planned release of Diablo III. Of course, at this stage there’s no confirmation on the all-but-certainty that alternate year developer Treyarch is the team building the next non-Modern Warfare entry in the series. My guess, though: in the almost certain likelihood that Treyarch is working on the next one, it’ll be a direct sequel to the history-hopping Black Ops.
Gamespot has a pretty nice writeup of the particulars of the earnings report, including news that the latest Spyro game, Slylanders: Spyro’s Adventures, performed above expectations, meaning more of these in the future. But the most attention-grabbing detail was that Activision’s retail, physical media-based sales are shrinking (down to $250 million from last year’s $320) while their digital sales are filling that gap, up from $363 million last year to $427 this year.
