Anne Rice On Twilight: "Stephenie Meyer Obviously Came Up With Something Very Rich And Interesting"

Anne Rice talking to MTV Geek at San Diego Comic Con 2011

Vampire Chronicles author Anne Rice caused somewhat of a bloody brouhaha October 28th as she took to her fan page on Facebook and had some choice words about the vamps of Twilight:

"Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town ---- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."

Both fans of Rice and Twihards flocked to the Facebook post -- which of this writing has over 9300 "likes" -- to voice their opinions on the subject. Some heartily agreed that Stephenie Meyer's vampires were inferior to the likes of Louis and Lestat, while others said that the Twilight books have their place in the vampire canon, and that Rice's statements were unfair.

When MTV Geek chatted with Anne Rice during this year's San Diego Comic Con, she only had nice words for the Twlight series, telling us:

"Stephenie Meyer obviously came up with something very rich and interesting by moving vampires into high school and a small town."

It is unclear what might have changed Rice's opinion on Twilight since then -- though it could be that while she respects Meyer's books on one level, on another she just doesn't dig sparkling vamps. As for contemporary vampire fiction Rice does enjoy, on the top of her list was Charlaine Harris' "Sookie Stackhouse" series, and she told MTV Geek that she watched True Blood every week.
