Secret Agent Men: Artists Show Their Spy vs Spy Tributes at NYCC

Strolling along the con floor here at New York Comic Con, it’s easy to overlook some great displays. Luckily, we didn’t miss the two glass cases in the corner of the DC Comics’ booth that held custom painted (and sculpted in some cases) Spy vs. Spy action figures from the famed MAD Magazine strip! Reading the name tags next to the toys came with some surprises at not just the talent involved from the toy industry, but also from comic artists, and even celebrities. Yes, fittingly Weird Al Yankovic customized one of the blank figures as did Adventure Time’s Pendleton Ward. Below you’ll find info on how the project came about, and also a ton of photos!

In 1961, MAD published the first installment of Spy vs. Spy by Antonio Prohias. What was intended to be a one-shot comic strip quickly grew to become one of MAD’s most popular and iconic features.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Spy vs. Spy and to celebrate this milestone (and five decades of exploding teeth) we wanted to do something really special! So, in addition to getting a Carvell ice cream cake, we also produced a number of 6 inch “blank” Spy action figures and sent them to a select group of cartoonists, comic book artists, toy designers, and miscellaneous creative genius-types to customize however they like!

As you can see in the two display towers, the results were absolutely amazing.

If you like what you see, you can view even more photos on our blog, The Idiotical.com! If you don’t like what you see, well, the photos are still going to be available at the blog, and you’re just going to have to find a way to live with that somehow.
