Earlier this year, at CES 2011, we were lucky enough to play with the coolest smartphone accessory ever, Sphero. Up until this point the only Spheros we’ve seen were prototypes and honestly didn’t look that good. Now Orbotix has revealed the final design along with some other goodies for those of us anxious to get our hands on Sphero.
Those of you not familiar with Sphero have a little catching up to do, so i'll try to sum it up. Sphero is an RC ball unlike anything we've ever seen before. It's controlled by an Android or iOS device using a variety apps that each let you play a certain game. For example: friends can compete in races and sumo-style matches using one app, while another could turn Sphero into a cat toy that never gets tired. A newly revealed app, Sphero Golf, turns the smartphone controlled ball into a virtual golf ball -- swing your smartphone like a golf club (Wii remote style) and try to make it into the virtual hole in your floor. It was announced months and months ago and we've been eagerly waiting it's arrival. For more info check out GoSphero.com.
Okay back to the news... The new design is similar to what we saw at CES with the only huge difference being the addition of a Sphero logo on the side. It also looks like Orbotix has ditched the weird squiggle design we saw on early renderings. The RGB LED lights are still there and shine through just like we’ve seen before. What we haven’t seen until now is the induction charging system that Orbotix told us about in January. It fits Sphero's personality perfectly and acts as a sort of display while it charges - you can see it in the image at the top of the page.
Sadly, we still don’t have a firm release date for Sphero, but Orbotix is sticking to the “late 2011” release we’ve been waiting for. The purchase price will be $129.99 and anyone interested can head over to GoSphero.com and place a reservation. About 30 days before your Sphero is ready to ship Orbotix will send you instructions on how to turn that reservation into a pre-order.
