Fall Geek TV Preview - Other Shows To Geek Out About

With September come the first hints of autumn: school is back in session, the leaves are turning red and orange, and more importantly, there’s TV that needs a watchin’! Here’s MTV Geek’s round-up of the nerd-tastic programs you’ll be watching (and DVRing [and downloading]) this Fall:

The Big Bang Theory

Premieres On: Thursday, September 22nd at 8pm on CBS

Why We’re Geeked: Will our faithful band of scientists finally, after four full seasons, crack the secret of the Big Bang on the fifth season premiere? And if so, will the Kull’grath, the beings from beyond time who wait just beyond the door to the creation of the universe be released from… Okay, fine, I’ve never watched this show. But I imagine I’ll be getting a thousand more e-mails this year from people saying, “Hey, did you hear? The referenced [INSERT FAVORITE COMIC HERE] on Big Bang Theory last night?” Yes, I did hear. Leave me alone.

Castle

Premieres On: Monday, September 19th at 10pm on ABC

Why We’re Geeked: …On the other hand, Castle becomes appointment viewing for comic book fans this year, as Nathan Fillion’s “creation” Derrick Storm is getting his own graphic novel. Expect plenty of in jokes about its release, and maybe even a few plot points. Plus, Fillion is just charming as all get out, so that’s nice. [Also, there were two crazy cliffhangers at the end of last season, but it’s way more important to talk about the comic, right? Right?]

Charlie's Angels

Premieres On: Thursday, September 22nd at 8pm on ABC

Why We’re Geeked: The guys who brought you Smallville share their take on three hot ladies solving crime. Oh, and in case you were concerned that this will contradict the continuity set forth in Charlie’s Angels 2: Full Throttle, Drew Barrymore’s Flower Films is producing… So expect a few cameos if ratings start to flag.

Chuck

Premieres On: Friday, October 21st at 8pm on NBC

Why We’re Geeked: It’s the last season of our favorite geeked out superspy, and you know what that means: no more tireless campaigns to get it renewed!!! Also, we’ll learn the final fate of Chuck, Sarah, and maybe even Captain Awesome.

Community

Premieres On: Thursday, September 22nd at 8pm on NBC

Why We’re Geeked: The geekiest sitcom on TV (take that, Big Bang Thoery!) had some of the most spectacular half hours of television ever made last season, from a heart-rending animated Christmas episode, to an insane two parter that brought in LOST’s Sawyer, and parodied Star Wars (kind of). This season, Michael K. Williams and John Goodman are guest starring, which is good with us.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Premieres On: Thursday, September 15th at 10pm on FX

Why We’re Geeked: Rob McElhenney, who stars as Mac gained a ton of weight this year… Because he thought it would be funny. That’s the sort of lengths this show goes to, which consistently, shockingly, and hilariously pushes the boundaries of what a TV show can do. Oh, and they’re doing a Pretty Woman parody this year, and it’s time someone finally took that movie down a peg.

The Nerdist

Premieres On: Saturday, September 24th at 10pm on BBC America

Why We’re Geeked: Chris Hardwick back on our TV sets? Yes, please! The hilarious host welcomes geeky guests to the BBC America stage, an adaptation of his popular (and awesome) podcast.

Mythbusters

Premieres On: Wednesday, September 28th at 9pm on Discovery Channel

Why We’re Geeked: Look, this show is always fascinating, light science without talking down to the audience. But just, for one season, can we have them fighting harpies and minotaurs? Please? A guy can hope…

The Onion News Network

Premieres On: Tuesday, October 4th at 10pm on IFC

Why We’re Geeked: The first season of this cable news spoof show was sharp, dark, and so dense with jokes that it demanded repeat viewings. Here’s hoping they keep it up in season two (I think they will).

Person of Interest

Premieres On: Thursday, September 22nd at 9pm on CBS

Why We’re Geeked: LOST’s Ben and Jesus team up to solve crimes, what more do you want? Well, the idea seems like leftovers from J.J. Abrams’ idea pad – mysterious man has mysterious numbers that point to people who are either future criminals, or future victims, and it’s up to Ben and Jesus to figure out which. There’s a good reason for that, too: it’s produced by J.J. Abrams. That said, the promo looks rad.

Ringer

Premieres On: Tuesday, September 13th at 9pm on The CW

Why We’re Geeked: Two Sarah Michelle Gellars on TV? We haven’t had that since Buffy fought her robot double, and that was pretty good. Also pretty good? Reportedly this series, which takes a thriller twist on The Prince and the Pauper.
