Fall Geek TV Preview - Sci-Fi and Horror

With September come the first hints of autumn: school is back in session, the leaves are turning red and orange, and more importantly, there’s TV that needs a watchin’! Here’s MTV Geek’s round-up of the nerd-tastic programs you’ll be watching (and DVRing [and downloading]) this Fall:

American Horror Story

Premieres On: Wednesday, October 5th at 10pm on FX

Why We’re Geeked: We don’t know a lot about this show, other than it’s about a family that moves into a haunted house, and the promos seem to have wandered off a Nip/Tuck promo shoot – appropriately, as the show is from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, who also creates N/T for FX. But beyond the prospect of horror on a weekly basis, the cast is awesome: Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, Dennis O’Hare, and Syler/Spock himself – Zachary Quinto – has a recurring role.

Bedlam

Premieres On: Saturday, October 1st at 10pm on BBC America

Why We’re Geeked: Another weekly ghost story, though this one is Birtish, so instead of saying, “Boo!” the ghosts say, “The Loo!” I’ve been waiting my whole life to make that joke, I think. Anyway, it’s based in an apartment building that used to be a mental asylum, which means the writers clearly have visited my neighbors. Haven’t waited quite as long to make that joke, actually.

Fringe

Premieres On: Friday, September 23rd at 9pm on FOX

Why We’re Geeked: The best geek show on TV returns after its jaw dropping season finale, and we can. Not. Wait. Fringe went for broke last season, taking the threat of cancellation seriously, by throwing caution to the wind. If last season had star Anna Torv talking like Leonard Nimoy as a plot point, an animated episode, and one of their characters ceasing to exist… What’s going to happen this year?

Grimm

Premieres On: Friday, October 21st at 9pm on NBC

Why We’re Geeked: A weekly procedural set in a world where fairy tales exist? Sounds like this is right up our alley! David Guintoli stars as a cop who finds out he’s secretly descended from fairy tale creatures himself, and picks up the fight in the modern day. Plus, the whole thing is produced by geek icon David Greenwalt. This is getting added to our DVR, for sure.

Once Upon A Time

Premieres On: Sunday, October 23rd at 8pm on ABC

Why We’re Geeked: A weekly procedural set in a world where fairy tales exist? Sounds like this is right up our alley! Jennifer Morrison stars as a bail bonds collector who finds out she’s secretly descended from fairy tale creatures herself, and picks up the fight in the modern day. Plus, the whole thing is produced by geek icon Damon Lindelof. This is getting added to our DVR, for sure.

Sanctuary

Premieres On: Friday, October 7th at 10pm on SyFy

Why We’re Geeked: We don’t know a ton about the fourth season of SyFy’s hit series, but we do know this: there is a musical episode. We will watch any musical episode of anything, so we’re sold.

The Secret Circle

Premieres On: Thursday, September 15th at 9pm on The CW

Why We’re Geeked: Hot teen witches fight, gossip, hook up with each other, and deal with supernatural threats? And it’s based on a series of books? I mean, we like both The Craft and Gossip Girl, so why wouldn’t we watch this? Plus, Terminator hunk Thomas Dekker stars as a male witch, and Natasha Henstridge is in it for the oldies in the crowd. Not me, though. I’m super young and cool, like you whippersnappers.

Supernatural

Premieres On: Friday, September 23rd at 9pm on The CW

Why We’re Geeked: Last season ended on a massive cliff-hanger, with nice guy angel Castiel ascending to the position of god, and Sam having all the floodgates of Hell opened in his head. Just a regular day at the office for the Winchester boys, but we’re dying to see where they go next… And Producer Ben Edlund’s promise that this season will bring the funny back has us psyched.

Terra Nova

Premieres On: Monday, September 26th at 8pm on FOX

Why We’re Geeked: Dinosaurs! Plus time travel and aliens maybe! I mean, to be fair, we kind of hated the first hour of the show (which we caught a sneak of at FanExpo), but once the dino-action got on screen, we were pretty much sold.

The Vampire Diaries

Premieres On: Thursday, September 15th at 9pm on The CW

Why We’re Geeked: Last season, The VD went from overwrought drama to cheesy delight. If that arc continues, by season forty-five, this should be the best show on television.

The Walking Dead

Premieres On: Sunday, October 16th at 9pm on AMC

Why We’re Geeked: So many reasons, not least of which is the awesome teaser trailer, and the promise that we’re getting back to basics (we’ll pretend last season’s trip to the CDC never happened). Plus, with creator Robert Kirkman more involved, and a new show runner straight from The Wire, we may not even miss Frank Darabont’s involvement… Though we were looking forward to a Rita Hayworth poster on the wall when they finally get to the prison, but oh well.
