IDW Draws on 'Magic: The Gathering' For Their Next Comic Series

Hasbro and IDW team up to bring the venerable collectable card game even more story.

Respectfully, we told you this all the way back during SDCC. But for those of you who didn't take a look at our pretty exhaustive SDCC coverage back in July, this Fall, IDW will be bringing you stories set in the universe of the card game that continues to maintain its popularity (contrary to the snarky belief of certain Gizmodo bloggerettes who will remain un-linked here). I know a lot of game developers (and just regular fans) who really get into the deep mechanics behind Magic, so I can see why Hasbro/Wizards of the West Coast and IDW decided that this is the right move for the property.

First up will be a four-issue mini focusing on "a unique, new Planeswalker, a powerful mage with the ability to travel between worlds in the Magic Multiverse. Many popular Magic: The Gathering characters will be featured in the series, as well." Additionally, select IDW titles will have alternate Magic trading cards included (and I think it would be a wasted opportunity if none of these new cards tie into some of the other IDW/Hasbro titles, but that's just me).

Writing chores will be handled by game designer and novelist Matt Forbeck with art by newcomer Martín Cóccolo.

Magic: The Gathering will be on shelves this Fall from IDW.
