The supernatural grade school comedy is hitting DVD November 1.
My first thought on the release of this 26-episode DVD set from Nozomi Entertainment was what, exactly, is going to happen to the continued serialization of the manga here in the U.S.? Gakuen Alice was a Tokyopop license, and given their pretty spectacular flame-out earlier this year, this leaves a lot of manga properties that were in mid-story without a home.
Anyway, for those of you interested in this series in another medium, Gakuen Alice will be getting its official North American release later this year in a five-disc set collecting all 26 episodes of the Tachibana Higuchi series (currently a creator without a lot of exposure here in the United States). I've included the official synopsis below, but essentially, it's about a school for geniuses that is secretly a training ground for kids with special abilities, all wrapped up in a junior comedy package.
Here's the official synopsis and specs on the release:
Mikan and Hotaru are best friends! (Well, according to Mikan, anyway. Hotaru doesn't seem to care.) Then one day, Hotaru is escorted away in a fancy black car, apparently scouted by a school in Tokyo called "Alice Academy." Crushed at the loss of her favorite pal, Mikan scurries after her, determined to enroll, too! But Alice Academy is a mysterious place. Can Mikan tough it out in a school where explosions, superpowers, giant baby chicks and axe-wielding teddy bears are the norm? Though it's not as if she has a choice, because once students enter Alice Academy, there is no escape! Contains the complete 26-episode TV series!
