Head of the Class: X-Men First Class Minimates Review (Spoilers)

Editor’s Note: This review of X-Men First Class Minimates contains movie spoilers…acted out by the Minimates themselves! You’ve been warned!

You guys have no idea how long we’ve been waiting for a 2” tall action figure of Kevin Bacon! Thanks to his performance as Sebastian Shaw in X-Men: First Class, we’ve finally had our extremely specific dream come true! Looks like we can scratch that off the “3 Things We’d Ask a Genie For” List, and it’s all thanks to those groovy dream-makers at Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum! We recently found ourselves in possession of an entire set of toys from the film, so we took ‘em out for a day of adventure and photographs. Welcome to our (spoiler-y) mini-review of DST’s X-Men: First Class Minimates! We’ll start things off with a shot of Shaw lying defeated before Magneto!

The lowdown from the back of the packaging:

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants, to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.

Azazel and Beast

Azazel scores the accessory in this two-pack– his teleportation effect! It’s made of semi-translucent plastic and attaches to the figure by a peg for his foot. It works great and really helps him earn his spot in the set. Beast’s specially sculpted feet add to his overall look and, coupled with his wild mane, add bulk to the figure.

White Queen and Havok

Both of these figures rely heavily on their decals to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Havok does this with the circular piece used to focus his power. Emma Frost accomplishes it with her cleavage. Bravo! While a Minimate of the beautiful and talented January Jones is indeed quite awesome, we’d have loved to seen one of the White Queen in her diamond form.

Professor X and Sebastian Shaw

Two leaders, matched up and ready for battle in this two-pack! Both are packing 14 points of articulation (as are all the others) and their joints are tight and easily poseable. Xavier is wearing one of the X-Men uniforms while Shaw is draped in a classy suit, cause what better way to threaten humanity than with smart menswear?!

Magneto and Mystique

This is easily our favorite two-pack in the series! Why? Well, Mystique is appropriately blue and detailed while Magneto can swap out his hairpiece for that familiar helmet we all know and love! The helmet not only slides tightly over his head, but is also held in place by a peg that inserts into the top of the Master of Magnetism’s skull. Like the other team members’ uniforms, the detailing is spot-on in both color and tight linework.

While there are no regular action figures for the film, these X-Men: First Class Minimates more than make up for it. As with the previous releases, each character is easily identifiable and undeniably cool. For fans of the film and/or sweet, sweet minifigs – these little mutants will be right up your alley!
