After much waiting and anticipation, we finally get a footage heavy trailer from Starz upcoming series Torchwood: Miracle Day… And it totally delivers the goods. We get more on the plot, hilarious one-liners, and bigger action than the series has ever before attempted. It’s a good time to be a Captain Jack Harkness fan.
Okay, here’s the trailer, and then some commentary afterwards:
Pretty cool, right? We get to see a lot more of Bill Pullman’s creepy character, who seems to be set up as the main human villain of the series. We get to see some patented Torchwood grossness, with the asploded body on the slab. And we finally get to see Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper back in action, throwing around quips (and rocket launchers!) like they’re good ol’ American action heroes.
Oh, and Gwen Cooper versus Dollhouse’s Sierra? Awesome.
Only thing we’re not looking forward to? The set up necessary in the first episode, as the new cast members search for Torchwood. Necessary for new viewers, aggravating for those of us who sat through three seasons already. I mean, don’t get me wrong: I’m sitting through it. But I hope the scene with Captain Jack saving what’s-her-name by jumping 100 stories to the ground isn’t the end of episode one, but much, much earlier on.
Oh, one other note: this weekend as I sat at a table at Big Apple Con in New York, a guy was chatting next to me about how he loved the first two seasons of Torchwood, but wasn’t a fan of Children of Earth. That guy was wrong. If you’re looking to get caught up on Torchwood before the July 8th premiere on Starz, check out the first ever episode or two, then skip ahead to the stunning Children of Earth. It’ll get you psyched, real good.
