Welcome to Crossovers We Want to See, a fairly self-explanatory recurring feature in which we pitch the meeting of a pair of characters or teams from different comic companies. Playing editor, we'll dream up writer and artist combinations and basic story points.
Crossovers We Want To See: Jenny Sparks & Baby New Year “Happy F&%#ing New Year”
Written by Warren Ellis, art by Rankin & Bass
When Santa Claus can't find Rudolph to help find Baby New Year he turns to the next best thing: Jenny Sparks, Spirit of the 20th Century. Now it's up to the chain-smoking, electricity-wielding Authority member to save the next year, which isn't something she's too thrilled about as you might imagine. When she discovers that Baby New Year ran away because people made fun of his giant ears, she tears through his home town, wreaking havoc before the two of them sit in a dark, dank bar and get sloshed. Baby New Year wakes up in a pile of his own excrement the next day exactly where he's needed to become the spirit of the next year.
Who better to write the adventures of the character he created in Stormwatch soon to be Authority, than Warren Ellis and what better style to ape for this than the classic stop-motion animation of the Rankin & Bass Christmas and New Years specials. Sure, we know the Authority has gone the way of the dinosaurs as did Jenny Sparks at the end of the last century, but let's be honest, she's a lot more well known than Jenny Quantum. It's comics, who says we can't mess with time and space?
