Following their November 2nd announcement and a short beta test period, Wizards of the Coast has officially released the online Dungeons and Dragons Character Creator. Gone are the days of lugging around notebooks and illegibly marked up character sheets! Now you can view and print your info from anywhere with an internet connection.
The benefits of this new tool are numerous, and include:
- Easy Access: Just enter the D&D site, log in, and launch the Character Builder from the Tool Box or the Character Builder tools page.
- Characters in the Cloud: The Character Builder is served from the D&D site, and all characters saved in the D&D database.
- Backwards Compatibility: Includes all character-building data you enjoyed in the previous versions, with full support for the importing of characters created in those older versions of the Character Builder.
- New Data Releases: Dark Sun and D&D Essentials data debuts in the new version.
Check out this clip, where Chris Youngs of the D&D Digital Studio will give a full demonstration of the Character Creator by building and equipping a character from scratch:
Wizards of the Coast is also working hard on an update of the Monster Builder application, which currently exists offline but will be brought into the cloud with all of the same benefits as the Character Creator. Although this project has been confirmed, there is no release date information.
A D&D Insider subscription is required to access the online applications, and one of these will run you anywhere from $5.95 to $9.95 per month depending on the length of subscription. This also includes access to the entire online D&D rules compendium, the offline Monster Builder (available until release of online version), as well as two monthly magazines, Dragon Magazine (for players) and Dungeon Magazine (for Dungeon Masters). For more information on the Character Builder application, see the official Wizards of the Coast FAQ.
