It looks like there’s more in store for the Rhino than just a Midtown Manhattan tussle with the famous wall-crawler. Paul Giamatti revealed to Collider that he will most likely be returning to thew new Spider-Man franchise in 2016’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”
The actor seemed surprised to learn that Sony’s already webbed off two weekends in the next five years for two additional Spider-Man movies following next year’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” taking the series up to “The Amazing Spider-Man 4” in 2018. “Do they really have it that far ahead?” Giamatti asked. “I think I’ve only done the next movie, I don’t know if I’m doing the next next movie. I didn’t know that. That’s amazing.”
Giamatti pleaded the fifth regarding the possible inclusion of the Sinister Six, a super-villain team comprised of a sextet of Spider-Foes, in the third film. “It seems like [it could be leading to] that kind of thing,” said Giamatti, echoing a statement he gave to MTV News back in September. “They’ve not told me anything hard and fast about that.”
But Sinister Six or no, Giamatti did reveal that he did sign a multi-Spider-picture deal with Sony, which he reckons means he’ll be around for the long-ish haul—unless something goes wrong. “Unless they really suddenly decided to not use me. They could, I suppose.”
Despite being years away, “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” is quickly shaping up. The film snatched up a trio of screenwriters yesterday—Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Jeff Pinkner. The third installment in the “Amazing Spider-Man” saga opens on June 10, 2016.
