Agent Coulson’s crack team of damaged-yet-relatable super-spies scored ABC the highest rated network drama debut in four years. A whopping 11.9 million viewers tuned in to “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC last night. To put that in perspective, “Arrow’s” season one debut last year on the CW only scored 4.14 million viewers, while “The Walking Dead’s” season three premiere just scored an impressive 10.87 million, just shy of “S.H.I.E.L.D.” Unlike both of those shows, however, “S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs on heavy-hitting network ABC, unlike the relatively upstart CW and cable channel AMC.
So far the only real competition the Marvel drama has for 2013-2014 ratings glory is NBC’s “The Blacklist,” the show that stars upcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron” bad guy James Spader. That show scored 12.6 million viewers, sure, but it only nabbed a 3.8 rating and a 10 share, while “S.H.I.E.L.D.” hit a high of 4.6/14.
The Marvel show also won in the key 18-49 demo, the demo that ABC has been trailing in as it entered this TV season in fourth place. It looks like recruiting “S.H.I.E.L.D.” to their lineup could have been a smart move, especially if the show can hold onto viewers.
And if viewers are thinking of jumping ship already for some reason, then ABC and Marvel have whipped together a season one trailer that, well, is next level awesome. The footage from the next few episodes promises even more exotic locales, creepy new threats (those red mask dudes!), and even funnier one-liners. This ride is just getting started.
You better tune in next week, otherwise you might make Melinda May mad.
