'Ant-Man' Gets A New July 2015 Release Date

The already-packed summer blockbuster season of 2015 just got a tiny bit more crowded.

Marvel Studios has moved "Ant-Man" from its original November 6, 2015 release date to a brand-new July 31, 2015 release date. That puts "Ant-Man" right in the heart of the summer season, hitting theaters just two weeks after Zack Snyder's still-untitled "Man of Steel" sequel (featuring Ben Affleck as Batman) arrives.

It's a risky move on paper, but there was an equal amount of risk in leaving "Ant-Man" in its fall spot. The next James Bond film, directed once again by "Skyfall" veteran Sam Mendes, is scheduled for that same November 6 release. As a spy film, the next Bond is a direct competitor against "Ant-Man," described numerous times in the past as a more espionage-heavy take on the shrinking superhero. Even a seasoned superhero would have a hard time taking out James Bond on the same weekend it crushed the box office on in 2012.

The good news is that we get more Marvel and our first taste of "Ant-Man" sooner than expected. The bad news is that it's so soon after the next "Man of Steel" film, so there's no telling how that'll effect the box-office haul of Marvel's Phase Three debut. And while director Edgar Wright once again proved with his current film—"The World's End"—that he's one of the finest action directors currently working today, he's yet to have a smash hit at the box office. Marketing and the success of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" will play a big part in "Ant-Man's success, and we're sure to find out "Ant-Man's" fate in just a couple of years.
