The fourth season of “The Walking Dead” hits AMC in just a little bit over a month from now. While the show hasn’t been afraid to make departures in the past, executive producer Greg Nicotero promises that an upcoming episode will borrow from Robert Kirkman’s comics series “almost verbatim.”
“It’s really fascinating to make those slight departures, introduce new characters and then get to a situation where you take one episode and you really stick to the source material,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in an extensive, cast and crew-spanning “Walking Dead” feature. “You’ll be surprised about the way the characters lay out.”
Fans of the comics can read into Nicotero’s words, based on where the TV show’s story is in relation to how the books have played out. One possibility addressed by the show’s creative team (and this comes with a big, honking SPOILER ALERT, so turn away now if you’re out of the loop), is following through with chopping Rick’s hand off, as the Governor does in the comics.
It could have happened in season three if not for how fast the story moved during those episodes, according to executive producer Dave Alpert. He added, “That’s not to say we’re not going to do it later,” with star Andrew Lincoln chiming in, “I keep saying we should do it, so maybe that’s going to happen!”
