‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Will Feature More Than A ‘Turn-Around-And-Smirk’ From Thanos

by Brett White

Longtime Marvel fans got a mid-credits scene worthy of freaking out about during “Marvel’s the Avengers” last year, when the mad Titan himself—Thanos—gave the camera a bit of side-eye and a toothy grin. The cameo was quick, but it immediately set comic book fans’ minds ablaze. Getting the entire Marvel Universe on the big screen was a possibility now, thanks to that one quick appearance. This proved to be the case when Marvel announced Guardians of the Galaxy,” a film that’s shaping up to be quite the love letter to Marvel’s entire cosmic line of comics.

In the new issue of Empire, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reveals that Thanos’ ties to “Guardians” will be strong indeed—and that he’ll have a role to play in the film.

“Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) is very much the main bad guy,” said Feige. “And Thanos is lurking above it all. You will learn more about Thanos in ’Guardians,’ for sure. Certainly you’ll get more than the one turn-around-and-smirk. You’ll get much more than that.” Feige doesn’t specify exactly how much more, but it will have to be a significant amount—at least enough to make up for the fact that Thanos won’t be appearing in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Feige also used the interview to dispel rumors that “Guardians” will be Marvel’s answer to “Star Wars,” saying, “We’re not making this to make Marvel’s ’Star Wars.’ We’re doing this to explore the other side of the existing Marvel Universe. The fact that Peter Quill is a human from our time, that he carries a personal cassette recorder with him, already it’s very different. It’s not a long, time ago in a galaxy far, far away, it’s now in a galaxy far, far away.”

That quote also dispels previous rumors that the film would be set in the future, circa the year 2045. Instead the film is set in the present day, which means that future crossovers with the Avengers are not out of reach.
