Vin Diesel made intergalactic waves earlier this week when he posted—and quickly took down—a picture of Groot to his Facebook page. That one action seemingly solidified Diesel as the voice actor behind “Guardians of the Galaxy’s” resident walking and talking tree, but a Facebook post does not automatically equal an official casting announcement. Fans still want to know if the voice behind “Iron Giant” will also voice Groot! Now, thanks to a report from the L.A. Times, it looks like the answer is a resounding… maybe.
“I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want,” said Diesel during a Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. luncheon on Tuesday. “As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.”
For those of you out there with cards that have “Vin Diesel,” “Groot” and “Steven Spielberg” squares, I think that’s probably a BINGO for you.
Diesel remained as cryptic as his Facebook post when asked directly about the role, saying that he posted the classic Groot pic because it inspired him.
“I get inspired by things. So if somebody sends me a book of conceptual art that’s the best character design work I’ve ever seen — I’m not kidding, I see that and I want to be a little cryptic and I want to say something positive. Even if it’s as cryptic as an old, dated image of a character.”
The closest that the “Fast and Furious” actor came to confirming the role was when he got down to the nitty gritty of scheduling.
“That’s the thing — I’m so busy. The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel. But I’m too busy to do a six-month role. So what Marvel came up with was really interesting.”
So it sounds like Marvel offered Vin Diesel something, but again… he doesn’t confirm that it’s Groot. He doesn’t even mention “Guardians” by title or the character by name. That “old, dated image of a character” could easily be one of the dozens of pictures of Riddick or Dom Toretto has on his page. Things don’t look to be official or confirmed yet, but at least Diesel is clearly having fun with this.
