It looks like the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have a new recruit. TV Line reports that Ex-"Ghost Whisperer" leading man David Conrad has joined the cast of ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." in a recurring role.

The site mentions that "S.H.I.E.L.D." has been in the process of casting a "brilliant and quirky scientist" that is a male in his 40s, which is just what Conrad is. And as usual, neither ABC nor Marvel are clarifying exactly who Conrad's character is. Considering that Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders) is the only pre-existing Marvel Comics character to be featured on the show, it's most likely that he isn't anyone we've heard of before. But... that doesn't mean we can't guess.

If we're looking at spy scientists from the comics, he could be Dr. Myron MacLain, who accidentally created vibranium in the comics. He could be Dr. Horatio Belgrade, a S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist whose sole appearance was in the X-Men spinoff comic "Cable" #58, which means Fox Studios most definitely has the red hot rights for Belgrade's impending big screen debut. Then there's Erik Gorbo, another scientist who used S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities to turn himself into a super-powered ape. He then used that strength to go on crime-sprees, because the '70s were weird.

If we step away from scientists, he could be Tony Masters, the agent that would go on to become the evil Taskmaster. Maybe he's Al Mackenzie, a late '80s addition to the organization who was briefly romantically involved with Nick Fury's main squeeze, Contessa Valentina Allegra di Fontaine.

Or he could be Clay Quartermain, one of the most prominent S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who has yet to appear in anything live-action. Quartermain's been featured prominently in the comics since 1967 and has appeared in a ton of comics. Wherever there's S.H.I.E.L.D., there's Clay Quartermain.

Obviously we have little proof that any of these guesses are correct, but it's always fun to write about a scientist that uses his skills to perfect an ape transformation. Odds are Conrad's not in the pilot, so we might find out who he is when the second episode airs on ABC on October 1st.
