‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’: Marc Webb Teases Mystery Characters, Promises Surprises

by Brett White

Of all the upcoming superhero movies, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has been the not-telling-you-who-this-actor-is-playing-est of them all. Right now, Sarah Gadon, Felicity Jones and Colm Feore are all playing mystery roles. We’re also not sure how Goblin-y Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan will get, and we haven’t heard anything else regarding B.J. Novak’s quick appearance on-set.

As frustrating as that may be for fans and bloggers alike, director Marc Webb recently revealed to Total Film that that’s all part of his masterplan.

“Anything you expect [about who these actors are playing], you’ll be surprised,” he said. “To be totally honest, I intentionally conceal these things because I want people to be engaged and surprised when they see the film and experience it for the first time. It’s not like ’Harry Potter’ or ’Twilight’ necessarily where you know the stories.”

“And we are constructing them from elements of the comics obviously, from the canon,” continued Webb. “And we pay homage and are very protective of certain elements of the canon, but we want people to experience it for the first time in the theatre and I think that’s an experience that it often robbed from the audience, so you’ll forgive me being coy [grins].”

All that being said, Webb did drop a hint about who Gadon is playing—if he’s to be trusted, that is. That grin in the last paragraph sure reads as mischievous.

Webb told ET Canada that “Sarah makes a number of appearances in the film, in a Hal 9000 way,” referencing the artificial intelligence character from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Gadon corroborated the story to Toronto Life, saying, “My character is an artificial intelligence officer. She represents the convergence of humanity and technology—it’s very Cronenberg.”

After a Google search, I’ve deduced that Gadon is playing… Spider-Man 2099’s holographic assistant Lyla! Okay, that’s probably wrong.
