With a cast that continues to grow, “Guardians of the Galaxy” has easily become the comic book movie to speculate wildly about. What was initially a film about the modern team has grown to include characters from both the original Guardians roster and the entire Nova Corps. New additions Glenn Close and John C. Reilly have been identified as members of the Nova Corps, and Michael Rooker was immediately pegged as Yondu Udonta. But the roles played by three other actors have remained shrouded in secrecy… until now?
Benicio del Toro, Karen Gillan and Lee Pace all joined the cast in unspecified non-Guardians roles. Now, Den of Geek is reporting that their source on the inside knows exactly who each actor is playing. Check out the rundown after the jump.
According to Den of Geek’s unnamed source, Benicio del Toro is playing the Collector, Karen Gillan is playing Nebula, and Lee Pace is playing Ronan the Accuser. Now let’s unpack this info dump.
The Collector has been rumored to play a big part in the film ever since actress Ophelia Lovibond was cast in a supporting role linked to the cosmic villain. People then assumed that Lee Pace might play the Collector, but it now looks like that role is for del Toro. But del Toro’s been signed on for multiple films, and the Collector is far from an A-List Marvel character. Den of Geeks explains that the Collector is “one of the oldest characters in Marvel’s universe, given that he dates back billions of years, protecting the universe in the way he sees fit.”
We listed the space-pirate Nebula as one of the options for Karen Gillan back when she was initially cast. This is a much more exciting role than the other one that’s been rumored – Angela. Not that there’s anything wrong with Angela. It just feels like Marvel is trying to make Angela happen after acquiring her from Image Comics. Nebula also claims to be Thanos’ granddaughter, which gives her a nice in with the established Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We kind of pegged Lee Pace to play Richard Rider, the Earth representative in the Nova Corps. It’s now known that Pace will play a character that goes from antagonist to protagonist in the film, and that could have fit with Nova easily. It also fits with Ronan the Accuser, a character that was very confusingly linked to John C. Reilly briefly. But Ronan of the Kree Empire has played both for and against the Marvel heroes, so his inclusion makes sense.
It’s possible we’ll be getting firm answers when San Diego Comic-Con time rolls around. Until then, keep on speculating!
