Aside from taking home a few Saturn Awards on Wednesday night, Clark Gregg made a few shocking statements on the red carpet. Please note the use of joke italics, as well as the use of quotation marks when I wrote “campaigns” in the headline, before reading this juicy Clark Gregg tidbit.
When asked what superhero he would like to play, the actor behind Agent Coulson responded:
“But, I was a big… see, I can’t say this because these guys are like, giant muscular superheroes, but if I had a magical transformation, I wouldn’t mind being Captain Marvel. Although, there’s a new Captain Marvel in the comics who’s a lady alien, and she’s hot. I would be a lady alien Captain Marvel.”
Start the petitions both for and against this ASAP, people!
I’m kidding. And so is Clark Gregg. Before anyone gets worked up that Gregg might be unhappy playing a regular dude in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, think again.
“I like that I’m not a superhero,” said Gregg. “It’d be a little implausible, and I don’t want to eat chicken breasts and spend as much time at the gym as poor [Chris] Hemsworth does.”
So that’s reassuring! As for his Captain Marvel statement, hey, I’m not gonna deny that it’d be pretty cool to see Clark Gregg as Mar-Vell, the Kree soldier turned Marvel superhero. But to nitpick the way every single comic book fan always does, Gregg’s assessment that the latest Captain Marvel is a “lady alien” is a bit inaccurate. Sure, Carol Danvers has an additional lobe on her brain that stores a whole bunch of alien Kree data and her powers, but she’s a human being, born and raised.
And while a Captain Marvel film about the current title-holder would have to be Carol Danvers through and through, not “Carl Danvers,” it would be pretty awesome to see Gregg cosplay in the new Cap duds. Plenty of dudes do at comic conventions nowadays (because it’s an awesome costume)! So PhotoShop masters, get on it!
