Spider-Man fans were shocked to learn that Shailene Woodley's role as Mary Jane Watson had been removed from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," especially since all of the actress' scenes had already been shot.
Initially it was stated that Mary Jane was just being postponed to a later Spider flick, but that statement's truth has been called into question. There was even a rumor that new cast addition Sarah Gadon was replacing Woodley in the role ASAP. That's been denied, but the reasons behind MJ's bumping has yet to be revealed. Until now... maybe.
Hollywood Life has heard from an unnamed source "close to the production" the supposed real reasons Shailene was held back. They're full of spoilers, though, so don't go peeking after the jump unless you're ready for it.
So, spoiler alert, Gwen's biting the dust in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and Marc Webb didn't want there to be any competition for Peter Parker's affections distracting from Emma Stone's big finale. The source says:
"Emma Stone's character dies in the next film and that really would take a bunch out of the film if Spider-Man all the sudden starts dating a new girl so close to an important characters death. They were noticing this occurring as they filmed Shailene's scenes. They want to make the death of Gwen Stacy really mean something and then it will leave room for Shailene to shine in the third film."
The sources debunks any rumors of jealousy felt by Emma towards Shailene, too. "There is no jealousy, this is definitely a creative decision and Emma was also told that she would have her character get the proper send off and probably would appear in flashbacks and nightmares in the third film." I like that the source specifically says "nightmares" instead of "dream sequence." Emma Stone will return... to torment you in your sleep!
This theory makes perfect sense, honestly, and we've already seen way too much evidence that Gwen isn't long for the franchise, like this graduation day speech and this outfit. It's so obvious! Or maybe it's... too obvious.
