Robert Downey Jr. To Return As Iron Man In ‘Avengers’ Sequels!

by Brett White

Everyone can relax! The great period of uncertainty has come to an end. Marvel has reported that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man for two more movies!

The films in question are “Avengers 2” and “Avengers 3,” which doesn’t have a release date but, come on, it’s happening.

“Avengers” auteur Joss Whedon has had faith that things would pan out all along, even as tensions climbed following “Iron Man 3’s” runaway success. Earlier this month, Whedon stood by his stance that everything would work out when interviewed by The Daily Beast.

“He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making ’Avengers 2′ without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that. I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine.”

The only sticking point on Marvel’s end was Downey’s hefty payday, as his previous contract included a stipulation that led to him getting around $50 million for “The Avengers.” As successful as Downey’s appearances as Iron Man were, that’s still a big chunk of change. Thankfully it looks like Disney and Marvel have agreed to Downey’s new, still unrevealed terms. That’s smart thinking as well, considering how important Downey is to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that “Iron Man 3” is now the 5th most successful movie of all time.

Of. All. Time.

This could also mean good news for the rest of the Avengers, as they were all rumored to be facing contract renewal issues. According to an article from just after “Iron Man 3’s” release, Deadline reported that the veteran actor had taken to protecting his teammates’ interests.

“To counter, I’ve learned the Avengers cast are becoming united behind Robert Downey Jr. who is seen as the ’leader’ – like ’a big brother’ in the words of one rep – for all the younger actors in the ensemble.” If Downey got a satisfactory contract, is it possible that the rest of the Avengers got the pay raise they wanted?

The contract only mentions “Avengers 2″ and “Avengers 3,” with no mention of an “Iron Man 4.” It’s entirely possible that we did see the final solo Tony Stark outing, a fact that will give his teammates and the larger Marvel Universe a chance to expand and make his appearances in “Avengers” even more special. And at this point, complaining about no “Iron Man 4″ when there was previously a possibility of no more RDJ-Stark ever again seems incredibly spoiled and whiney. Let’s just be thankful for what we have! And you know what we now have at least two more movies full of…?
