It looks like Spider-Man will have to wait just a bit longer to hit the jackpot. In the middle of their cover story about the upcoming YA film "Divergent," Entertainment Weekly revealed that leading actress Shailene Woodley's small part in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has been pushed back to the third installment in the ever-expanding franchise.
"Of course I'm bummed," Woodley told Entertainment Weekly. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."
Director Marc Webb was pretty up front about Mary Jane playing only a small part in the film. The actresses' brief stay on the set seemed to confirm her limited involvement; she first popped up on the set in late February and was gone two weeks later. It's not mentioned as to whether or not the footage, including this scene between Gwen Stacy and MJ, will be used in "Amazing Spider-Man 3" or not.
While it's sad to see Mary Jane's appearance delayed, it might help streamline the film's story. The film is already overloaded with characters (mostly villains), and there's now the theory that Felicity Jones is playing Black Cat. So maybe the possible love triangle isn't Peter/Gwen/MJ so much as it is Peter/Gwen/Black Cat...
With this announcement coming right after the confirmation of two more Spidey sequels, it makes me think that MJ's involvement was possibly always tenuous. Maybe Webb was waiting for confirmation of a sequel to decide whether or not to include her? Of course, considering some of the more revealing SPOILERS floating around, holding off on MJ might make a lot of sense.
