‘Man Of Steel’ Sequel To Arrive In… 2014?!

by Brett White

After breaking box office records, a “Man of Steel” sequel is guaranteed. In fact, one’s already in development, which means that Warner Bros. must have felt pretty confident in the film prior to its release. But surely a sequel isn’t in the picture for a few years — oh wait. The Wall Street Journal casually mentioned a 2014 release date? Say whaaaaat?!

“Warner is already in development on a sequel to “Man of Steel” and is expected to fast track that for release as soon as 2014, said knowledgeable people close to the studio,” the WSJ reports. “In addition, it has long been developing a ’Justice League’ team-up movie featuring characters such as the Flash and Wonder Woman that could come out as soon as 2015.”

Whoah whoah whoah, slow down, Warner Bros.! A sequel in 2014 and a team-up movie in 2015? Aren’t we taking things a little… fast? A lot of people are not even sure if they like you! But as fast as this all seems, screenwriter David Goyer has already told Bleeding Cool a few of his thoughts about the next film.

“To me, the interesting challenge is could he solve hunger in the horn of Africa? What would he do with the Arab Spring? What would he do in Syria? Partly you could argue, ’How could he not intervene in something like the situation in Syria?’ But the other argument is, ’Is it a hornet’s nest if he intervenes? Does he have the wherewithal or the knowledge to intervene in something like this?” Any hopes that a Superman sequel might inject some of the lighthearted fun so integral to the comics have probably now been dashed.

Speaking to some of the points I made in my op-ed from Friday, fast-tracking a sequel for 2014 actually doesn’t sound like a bad idea as long as they can turn a quality movie around that quickly. SPOILERS for the end of “Man of Steel” from here on out, by the way.

The film ends right where I feel it should have begun, with Clark Kent taking a job at the Daily Planet. That’s the status quo and dynamic that the general population knows, and I think it’s one that people are eager to see on the big screen. Honestly, a lot of the ill-will the film has received from die-hard Superman fans could be rectified by putting out a sequel that gets to the heart of the character and shows him being the hero we all wanted to see, and maybe the sooner the better.
