In a pair of interviews, actors Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford have managed to spill a few more beans than normal regarding their roles in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” If you’re wanting to go into “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” clean, I’d go on and skip this blog post. Even though we haven’t seen any footage from the film yet, I’m betting that one of the things hinted at here won’t make its way into any of the film’s advance materials. The least spoilery thing Anthony Mackie said just confirms what I’ve been thinking about “Captain America: The Winter Soldier all along.”
“So this movie, if you look at the cast, with everybody in S.H.I.E.L.D. and (co-stars Robert) Redford and Sam Jackson and everybody who’s in the movie, it’s kind of turning into ’The Avengers Part 2′ because the cast is so big.”
With Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Emily VanCamp and others also appearing, yeah, it’s a pretty big cast. It’s easily the biggest cast of Phase 2 leading up to “The Avengers 2″ (and who knows how that cast is going to shake out). Keep on reading to get to the more spoilerriffic stuff.
Anthony Mackie also revealed just how involved the Falcon is going to be in the sequel, saying in his interview with The Times-Picayune:
“Sam’s very involved. I’m in about 60 percent of the movie. Captain America, the Black Widow and the Falcon take down the Winter Solider together, and they solve the crime at hand and take down the Winter Soldier.”
That’s pretty tame stuff, especially compared to what Robert Redford might have let slip to The Straits Times as reported by Here Be Geeks:
“I like the idea of playing a villain… I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.”
So here’s the thing: Redford’s not playing a villain, at least that’s what Marvel wants us to think. So far they’ve claimed the veteran actor is playing Alexander Pierce, which is indeed the name of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent but he’s not featured in the source material and isn’t that meaty of a role for Redford. Here Be Geeks has a great theory about who Redford could be playing, if he is indeed playing a villain. The theory even fixes Hugo Weaving’s absence as Red Skull.
Right now “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is packed with henchman level bad guys (Crossbones, Batroc, the Winter Soldier, Arnim Zola) and no real mastermind. There’s a hole to be filled, and it looks like it could be filled by Redford.
