The latest “Amazing Spider-Man 2” set photos may not come directly from director Marc Webb (like so many have before), but they offer a deeper level of insight than any previous TwitPics. You can check out the images below, but be warned that possible spoilers lurk after the jump. Big ones. Ones that you’ll wish you hadn’t seen, if you’re aiming to remain spoiler-free until the film opens next summer.
So what’s so special about this outfit and location? Well, Gwen Stacy wore an outfit quite similar to this in 1973’s “Amazing Spider-Man” #121. But what makes that issue so special? Well…
As you can see, the last time Gwen Stacy wore that outfit near a bridge, she was thrown off of it… to her death. In fact, Gwen Stacy’s death, and how shocking it was when it was published 40 years ago, has become the character’s defining trait. The films have played with the expectation of her death a few times before in “Spider-Man 3” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Heck, Mary Jane Watson was thrown off of a bridge in the first “Spider-Man” movie, so these films have been teasing this moment for a while. Is the tragic event going to unfold in next summer’s film?
This all seems way too obvious, though. If director Marc Webb really wanted to troll fan expectations, this is exactly the way to do it. Put Gwen Stacy in that outfit, near water and have our imaginations run wild. I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns out to just be another scene in the film, just because this seems like they’re showing their hand too early.
