If box office totals are any indication, then odds are you spent your weekend flying high with "Iron Man 3." Box Office Mojo reports that the Iron Man three-quel grossed an estimated $175.3 million domestically this weekend, bringing its worldwide gross to just over $680 million. Sure, that may just be a week's worth of four-course meals where billionaire Tony Stark is concerned, but to the rest of us that's big money.

The opening puts "Iron Man 3" a bit behind the current weekend champ, last year's "Marvel's the Avengers." That film, which also prominently featured Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, earned an unbelievable $207.4 million, a total that now seems almost impossible to overtake. The previous runner-up was 2011's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" with $169.1 million.

Compared to other superhero films, "Iron Man 3" is holding its own critically while destroying competition at the box office. Previous three-quels don't even come close to the film's total. "The Dark Knight Rises" scored $160.8 million during its opening weekend, "Spider-Man 3" earned $151.1 and "X-Men: The Last Stand" earned $102.7.

Of course, "Iron Man 3's" success is tied to "The Avengers." Box Office Mojo rightly points out that "Iron Man 3" is more a sequel to "The Avengers" than "Iron Man 2." The positive word of mouth "Iron Man 3" is generating should keep it's earnings high, at least until it's first true competition, "Star Trek Into Darkness," opens on May 17th.
