‘Avengers 2’ Casting Call: Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch

by Brett White

When Joss Whedon flat-out stated that he intended on including a “brother and sister act” in “The Avengers 2,” it caused the entire comic book community to do a double-take. The most prominent brother and sister pair in Marvel Comics are Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, two characters everyone pretty much assumed were tied up over at Fox since they are the children of Magneto and, you know… mutants. But apparently Fox’s film rights to Marvel’s mutants contain a loophole for longtime Avengers like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. And since the pair most likely aren’t showing up in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” or “The Wolverine,” Marvel is free to call dibs. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige didn’t deny the duo’s inclusion in Whedon’s first draft, either.

The sequel isn’t due in theaters for another two years, so firm confirmation and casting is definitely a ways away (we have “Iron Man 3” to get through first!), but that doesn’t mean I can’t start wildly speculating. For this casting call, I’m looking only at actors that already work together for two reasons: 1. Pietro and Wanda Maximoff need to work off of each other effortlessly and casting them together makes sense; 2. This arbitrary limitation prohibits me from just listing all the usual suspects (sorry Connie Britton, who should be in literally everything).

Check out the candidates below.

Vincent Kartheiser & Alison Brie

Quicksilver’s most notable trait has to be his rampant ego and epic cantankerousness. Kartheiser’s been perfecting his portrayal just such a character by playing Pete Campbell on “Mad Men.” Brie’s been considered for Marvel movies in the past, including “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” so making her the Scarlet Witch makes sense. Brie’s an actress that audiences naturally gravitate towards and sympathize with (especially in her role as Pete Campbell’s wife). Having audiences relate to a character that’s essentially a ticking time bomb could give “Avengers 2” a nice tension. And yes, I acknowledge the quasi-ick factor of having people that play a married couple play brother and sister. But they’re actors.

Max Greenfield & Zooey Deschanel

Greenfield looks pretty much exactly like a Silver Age drawing of Quicksilver and, like Kartheiser, he plays another self-obsessed character on “New Girl.” His character, Schmidt, is basically Quicksilver played for laughs instead of drama. Deschanel’s known for her trademarked Etsy-ish charm, but imagine her focusing that energy into a performance that’s more… sinister. I bet that Deschanel can bring the creepy as well as she brings the quirky. And considering that Scarlet Witch has been more of a threat to heroes in the past decade than actually one of the heroes, the ability to bring the creepy is a must.

Rob James-Collier & Michelle Dockery

These “Downton Abbey” co-stars would bring an international flair to the team, tossing in two British heroes alongside the predominantly American crew. James-Collier would bring a much darker, smoldering intensity to Pietro Maximoff; can’t you imagine this guy going toe-to-toe with Robert Downey Jr.? Yeah, Quicksilver is a hero, but he’s quite unpleasant at times. Dockery’s Wanda Maximoff would have a little more control and tense restraint than the other actresses on this list, which would pair nicely with James-Collier’s combustible Quicksilver.
